COURSE: ANATOMY FOR TT LEVEL 200
This course explores human anatomy with the intention of using that knowledge to add a greater understanding and depth to our yoga asana practice. However, it is my intention that we do this with the understanding that asana practice is not the end point of yoga, but only the beginning. Likewise, theoretical knowledge of anatomy can only take us so far, and must eventually be combined with a kinesthetic understanding of anatomy developed organically from doing a consistent asana practice over a long period of time. The basic knowledge of anatomy covered in this course is intended to be a starting point from which to continue to think critically and explore the application of anatomy in yoga asana. Knowledge of the components of human anatomy will give you tools to hypothesize from as you begin to apply knowledge of anatomy to particular situations in practice and teaching. The basic concepts as covered in this course will hopefully spark an interest in continuing your study of human anatomy and its relationship to yoga asana practice.
MODULE 1INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW OF COURSE
This Yoga Anatomy Module for 200 hour Teacher Trainings will focus on a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of human anatomy. It will cover basic terminology as well as major anatomical systems, sections of the body, and their components. Anatomical systems and parts that will be explored in this course include: connective tissue, the muscular system, neuromuscular principles, the nervous system, the skeletal system, the foot & ankle, the knee, the hip joint, the psoas, the pelvis, the SI joint, components of breath & bandha, the spine, the shoulder complex, and the hand, wrist, & elbow.
MODULE 2CONNECTIVE TISSUE AND THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM
This lesson will help you understand how a broad array of components can affect movement in the body. You will learn how connective tissue forms the basis for most tissues in the body. You will also learn the structure and function of several particular types of connective tissue: ligaments, tendons, and fascia. Additionally, this lesson will help you understand how these tissues work to either allow or restrict movement. You will also learn the components of a muscle and how they come together to create a functional muscle.

MODULE 3NERVOUS SYSTEM AND NEUROMUSCULAR PRINCIPLES
This lesson will introduce you to basic neuromuscular principles including the ‘Principle of Opposing Muscles’ and the technique of ‘Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation’. You will also learn the basic structures that make up the nervous system and skeletal system and allow them to function. You will gain an understanding of the structure, composition, and function of bones and joints. In this lesson we will also explore the concept of tensegrity and how it can be used as a model for the interconnectedness of body systems.

MODULE 4THE FOOT AND ANKLE
In this lesson, you will learn the basic structural anatomy and movements of the foot and ankle. An understanding of how the structures are put together will help you understand how they allow for or prevent the functions of the foot and ankle. This lesson will help you understand why the foot is the foundation for overall posture. You will also learn in this lesson how the components of the foot and ankle, like the arches of the foot, can contribute to the energetic qualities we see in overall movement.

MODULE 5THE KNEE JOINT
This lesson will introduce you to the way the anatomical components of the knee come together to create its function. In this lesson you will learn the three bones that come together to create the knee joint. Additionally, you will learn how the structure of the patella (one of the knee bones) helps to makes the function of the knee possible. You will be introduced to the four main ligaments in the knee, their locations, and their functions. Similarly, you will learn about the structure and location of the meniscus and how it contributes to overall function at the knee joint. This lesson will also help you become familiar with the movements that are possible at the knee joint. In this lesson you will become familiar with the muscles that surround the knee joint (the quadriceps, hamstrings, iliotibial band, and gastrocnemius). You will be introduced to the location and functions of each of these muscles, which together, allow movement to happen at the knee joint.

MODULE 6THE HIP JOINT
This lesson will explain the basic structure and function of the hip joint. Specifically, we will explore the muscles of the quadriceps group, muscles of the hamstrings group, the adductors, the gluteal muscles, and the deep six lateral rotators. You will learn the names, locations, and functions of each of these important components of the hip joint. You will also learn how these key muscle groups at the hip joint impact the possible movement at this joint.

MODULE 7THE PSOAS, THE PELVIS, AND THE SACROILIAC JOINT
This lesson focuses on a final group of muscles that move the hip joint. In this lesson you will learn which muscles make up the iliopsoas, where they attach, and what their functions are. You will also learn to identify the structures that make up the pelvis as well as learn how the structures are connected. In this lesson you will also learn what movements are made possible in the pelvis by the way in which the structural components come together. This lesson will also introduce you to the location and function of the sacroiliac joint (SI joint). You will learn about the types of movement that can happen at the SI joint as well as what causes movement at this joint.

MODULE 8ANATOMY OF ENERGETICS: BREATH AND BANDHA
This lesson we’ll explore the links between breath and bandha. You will learn which anatomical structures represent the physical aspects of mula and uddiyana bandha and how you might begin to actively look for bandha in asana practice. Additionally, this lesson will explore the purposes of bandha in asana practice. Finally, this lesson will examine methods of breathing and how the breath can be influenced by the activation of mula and uddiyana bandha.

MODULE 9THE SPINE
In this lesson, you will be introduced to the structural components of the spine. You will learn how these components are connected in a way that allows for all the movements of the spine. You will also learn about the differences in structure and corresponding function in each of the three main areas of the spine. This lesson will explore the muscles that surround and move the spine. You will learn the location and function of the muscles of the spine. Additionally, this lesson will introduce you to the vertebral discs.

MODULE 10THE SHOULDER GIRDLE
In this lesson you will also learn about the structural components of the shoulder girdle and how they come together to allow the movements of the shoulder. You will be introduced to the main muscles of the shoulder girdle which move the humerus, the scapula, and the clavicle. You’ll learn where each of these muscles is located and what movements they are responsible for or assist with.

MODULE 11THE HAND, WRIST, AND ELBOW
In this lesson we will explore the kinetic chain of the upper body extremities: the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. You will be introduced to the structural components of these parts of the body and the movements that they can initiate. This lesson will also cover some of the differences in movement types between the kinetic chain of the upper and lower body.
